Perkin Elmer bought the optics portions of EG&G. Mr. "E" was the inventor of the strobe light, and thus optics was a natural evolution for the company. If I recall correctly, the high explosive used to trigger the A bomb is set up with some sort of very powerful strobe light device, really just to generate a thermal wave. Smuggling attempts regarding these nuke triggers were pretty common in the 70's and early 80's, but you never hear about it anymore, so I gather the technology is no longer a black art.
