The runway was extended across the lakebed in 1961 for the A-12 Oxcart program.

The handling qualities of the early A-12 at take off and landing speeds were all fun and games, and the maximum amount of runway was required for fast taxi tests where the aircraft would be accelerated to take off speed then stop again.

I believe the lines were marked on the lake bed using old motor oil.
