It is hard to tell for sure, but it sounds like it might have been flares used in the aerial war games. They are often dropped by planes that are under attack to divert heat seeking missiles. Flares look like bright orange "orbs", often several in a straight or slightly curved line. They burn out after a few seconds. There are also illumination flares, which can burn for several minutes. They are suspended on parachutes and usually appear to hang motionless in the sky.
