Rachel & Area 51 Trip - October 5-7, 2007
by Connor & Lori

Day 1 - Friday October 5, 2007 4:30 AM

We woke up, got ready and headed to the airport. Got to the airport, parked, got through security and everything just fine and I found a penny heads up--thought it meant good luck. So, we boarded flight was fine until the descent. I know it is usually bumpy when landing in Vegas, but today there were wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour, making for a terrible landing. Luckily I didn't have breakfast that morning.

Day 1 - Friday October 5, 2007 3:25 PM

We stopped at Ash Springs to get gas and found our way to the E.T. Highway. Once we got to Rachel we stopped and took pictures by the E.T. Highway sign/Rachel sign. The first thing we did was stop at the A'Le'Inn for a bite to eat. Very nice food. Talked to the employees for a while, got our room key, unpacked our stuff and went to Groom Lake Road. Just the intersection of GLR and E.T. Hwy. because we saw a car hauling butt and didn't want to get in its way. The weather was really cold and we went back to the A'Le'Inn for the evening.

Day 2 - Saturday October 6, 2007 7:08 AM

When we woke up we were freezing. The room's heater wasn't working and the guy in the room next to us was using the bathroom all night so we didn't get much sleep. That's when we made the decision to go to Las Vegas and pamper ourselves at the high-class Mandalay Bay hotel. But before that we drove down the long and lonely Groom Lake Road. No pictures there because we were too nervous except when a security truck whizzed by us.

We stopped at the Windmill Ridge restaurant and had breakfast. We left there and stopped in Alamo for gas and to see the bus at the courthouse. I got a few pictures of it. (Don't tell anyone else, but I touched it!) Just being around the bus gave me a weird feeling. Then we were off to Vegas. You might say we were done with Area 51, but not completely. We got a room in Vegas and I snapped a picture of the JANETs from the 22nd floor of the Mandalay Bay. It's kind of greenish--has something to do with the gold finish on the outside of the windows. Anyway, we had a great dinner and a wonderful night's sleep.

Day 3 - Sunday October 7, 2007 8:32 AM

We woke up to our sad final day in Nevada. Before we left for the airport, we visited the Shark Reef; a pretty cool site. Then we went to the JANET Terminal and I snapped a picture through the fence (you can see the fence in one of the shots). Also got the entrance gate building. A guy in camouflage was glaring at us and scared us away.

We spent several hours at LAX and off we went into the rainy abiss we call home. Overall it was a great trip and we are dying to go back!

Sincerely,

Connor & Lori
