DOD to Study F-22 Raptor Further - Decision Months Away 2/9/01

Although the Air Force and program contractor Lockheed Martin have completed
preliminary flights and testing of the F-22 that were needed before a
Defense Acquisition Board can rule on further funding, the Air Force notes
that a final decision to fund next steps in the program could still be down
the road. This is in part because of the strategic review now being
undertaken by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Pentagon spokesman Rear
Adm. Craig Quigley said that the review is expected to be completed "in some
number of months." Quigley also noted that should the process take longer
than a couple of months, funding for other programs such as the V-22 Osprey
could be affected.
