I should point out a good tip I found in Eller's book. He suggests avoiding early morning or late afternoon unless you are 100% sure the sun will be behind you AND you don't mind the long shadows. Otherwise, 10AM to 2PM is best for aerial photography. In Tom Mahood's article, he mentions trying to see Area 19, but the glare from the south made it difficult. Tom's trip started at 7AM, so this makes sense.

Normally in the desert, you are trying to take photographs as early as possible to avoid thermal wiggles. However, that is mutually exclusive with a good sun angle, so perhaps a target of 10AM would be best.

Note that the windows need to be open shoot photos, so the winter trip could give you a serious dose of cold air.
