Pat,
All the info by Lone wolf and Chuck is excellent. Do bring along water, good walking shoes, and a hat in case (worst case) your car goes inop and you have to hoof it back to the highway or wait for assistance. the cammos have never helped anyone that we have heard, but if you get stranded and thirsty enough, you KNOW where the gaurd shacks are. Since you are a photographer, just bring the gear you would usually use for a field assignment and make sure you make CD's of your shots so you share them with us when you get back. The Cell phone coverage really is that bad, but I have made an analog call from the saddle of the ridge jusr below Tikaboo, so if you can get high enough it may work. Chuck was on that climb as well, but I was carrying a bunch of camera gear so I was pretty much the last to arrive.
Good luck and watch the road as it does vary in it's grade and driveability. Don't get high-centered and watch the hidden dips (that's why the advice on lower speed is excellent).
Take care and have fun from a fellow photographer and Miami boy.
