It's possible the cammo dudes have MDT's (mobile data terminal), but not very likely. The cops use them to free dispatch from running the plates, but I can't see the cammo dudes being that busy with the two or three visitors they have at any one time. In any event, the state of California charges for such data, no matter how the request is made. When I got my plate and DL running demo, we did it via MDT on someone who volunteered his information, which was shown to the PD just to make sure they weren't doing any illegal requests.

Typically a MDT setup occupies the passenger seat with the computer gear, but the cammo dudes are two man units, so I don't think they have data capability.

I've contacted the Calfornia DOJ regarding vehicle registration requests and FOIA. When I get an answer, I'll do a post.
