BTW, those familiar looking structures were Biosphere 2, the environment experiment northeast of Tucson. Even the launch area and some of the tunnel-like scenes were there in the passageway to and inside one of the "lungs" - the chambers used to equalize the expansion and contraction of the air inside the main "greenhouse" structure. (Image link was taken during the recent wildfire south of there.)

From the credits, I'd guess the town and desert filming was done near Bisbee, AZ. Just a guess, as I've never been there.
