The small Janet plane lands at North Base at "oh dark thirty", so I would say get there before the sun rises. Note that this route takes a lot longer than you think. It's about 37 miles starting from highway 14. If you have a GPS, head to the hill located at
N34 49 04.5 W117 45 45.2
It is about 100ft about the main road, which is enough to get you above the brush and then some. All along this road on the other side of the fence you will find photo targets, namely junked military airplanes.

If you wish to monitor the base, you will need scanner capable of trunk tracking (Uniden 235 or better). You can find trunking information if you do a google on
"Edwards Trunk Radio System". www.airnav.com should have the latest air freqs.

Security on the base is provided by the Kern County Sherrif Dept., while you will be observing from LA County. [Useful information if you are visited.]

While in the area, you may want to check out Gray Butte at
N34 33 54.6 W117 41 05.8 and El Mirage at
N34 36 59.7 W117 36 16.9
Gray Butte has some serious looking security (such as copious concertina wire), but El Mirage looks kind of low key.
