One year during the defcon hackers conference (held yearly in Vegas), some attendees say they released a helium baloon with foil attached near area 51, and a jet was scrambled to intercept the object. [I think I saved the Mercury News "West" magazine where the article appeared, but I know I haven't scanned it.] I put a link to defcon. I haven't been to it personally, but I heard from someone who attended that it was lots of fun. [You could probably pay for the trip by resellling the conference swag. ;-)]
