From what I have heard, several theories include the idea that "space junk" hit the Columbia, or possibly that a "sprite," those odd discharges from clouds that can reach several hundred thousand feet in height, may have been possible culprits. Right now nothing is being ruled out but these seem to be somewhat less likely than more obvious explanations for the accident, such as tile damage.
