just for the record: Nodody here said that your friend is a liar or dishonest. But even the most well-meaning and honest person can simply misjudge something.

I'm sure your friend honestly believes that what he saw was a large mysterious aircraft, but that doesn't make it true by default. In fact, it's one of the basic rules for the research into "strange phenomena" (UFOs, etc.) that you don't believe a claim only because of the claimants credentials or his personal background.
