Agreed. One night (a June 6th :) ) while camping near Groom Lake Road we saw flares and I pointed my telescope at them. We could see the flares, parachutes and smoke. Of course a UFO group from L.A. got quite excited, but they definitely were flares.

But as to the Phoenix lights of March, '97 -- There were actually two distinct and in my opinion unrelated, sightings. The earlier one, about 8:30, was proved without a doubt to be flares. The second, IIRC about 10:30, was another story. Speculation ranges from your standard black triangle UFO to a flight of small planes in formation. (One viewer claims to have looked through a telescope and actually seen nav lights.) I think the verdict is still out on this one.
