Look at the topo associated with the image. It is some sort of water holding system. Not all of the system is on the topo, but part of the system is documented. You can only guess it has been expanded.

Mary Schafer from Edwards hangs out on rec.aviation.military. She probably has first hand knowledge of this if you are really motivated to find out what the nature of those dark areas. Her email address from usenet is miliff@qnet.com, but you never know if usenet addresses are real.

I haven't got around to releasing it, but I have documented many holes in the terraserver in interesting areas. They are all whited out, not black. Plug in the coordinates of basecamp and you can see censored terraserver data.
