One thousand MW's is ALOT of power. The local area does not justify the installation, but with the deruglation of power companies, they could be thinking about tapping the California market. The utilities out there have been getting top dollar for electricity. So it could be a savvy business move. However, the adjacent facility and the spooky nature of Aerojet leads me to believe that part of the reason is additional power requirements of Groom Lake. The current (sorry for the pun) power supply probably is maxed out and some new generation facility is required. Since the faciliy needs to be self-sufficient i.e. no oil or natural gas lines or coal trains, the only really feasible source (besides Nuclear - and that's expensive and would cause a stir from idiot intervenors) would be something "green" like solar, geothermal, tidal, or hydro. Well it IS the desert, so the choise of solar makes perfect sense. The power plant is six to eight years from producing power if they continue on - so we'll have to watch the progress, and which way the power lines run. Good job of research.
