I talked with a vendor who does perimeter alarm systems using fiber optic cables. They can detect where a cable is deformed when it is crossed, probably using time domain reflectometer technology. The cable is very cheap, easily buried, and other than disturbing the ground when installed, impossible to detect since it emits no RF and has no metal associated with it. [Generally when you do commercial fiber optics or anything that uses plastic pipe, you have a tracer wire in the bundle just so that you can find the cable.]
