The test where a Boeing 707 was remotely piloted to crash-land to test the passenger survivability with new feul additives was a HUGE undertaking for the FAA. A ground course was set up to specifically slice the aircraft's wings and maximize the fuel spillage. Even in the sixties, the cost was not cheap, and a lot of resources went into the project. Unfortunately the ground-based pilot screwed up the crash-landing and failed to place the aircraft where it would produce the optimim results, so much of the data that was wanted did not get obtained. It made for a neat film though.
