Yes, Jerry Freeman did indeed take his stroll across the desert, this according to my conversation with the dude who wrote the article accompanying the journals in the LV Sun. He was able to answer some quesitons I had about info that wasn't included in the article or journals

1997, in some ways, wasn't that long ago. Since then advances in sensor technology have come a long way and the same goes for advances in area security coverage.

If the late Mr. Freeman were alive to take another similar walk today, he'd end up in handcuffs.
