I have to admit that I didn't realize this, but I guess unless you can find a way to extract energy from the molten rock, thereby reducing its mass, you are pretty much stuck with having to get rid of some of the material. The only real advantage of melting the rock would be to seal the tunnel walls, which is really not much of an issue in solid rock.
