While hiking in the hills today, I noticed a twin engine jet flying overhead that had the same puffs in the contrail, but only when the plane was in a turn. The donuts contrail was on the inside turn. I wonder if when a jet makes a slow turn that they throttle down one of the engines a bit and perhaps that leads to the puffs in the contrail. Or perhaps there is a funny vortex during a turn on one side of the plane.
