cherokee mine

Doing some "recon" for the Cherokee Mine, I noticed there is a long strip of land next to the mine that looks like a runway, but is too short (only 2500 ft). It is pretty obvious on the sat image. Can someone who has been to the area explain this strip?

Looking at the general area around the mine, there are only a few areas with the amount of brush as found in Tom Mahood's photos, so finding Walt's landing zone should be too difficult, but you never know.

Incidentally, the Garmin topo map has a spot called Viola only 75 ft west of the mine. The general area is known as the viola district, but what is the refference to viola about?
