I checked out this tailing pile. [Oh yeah, turns out there is a small mine shaft in the middle of the pile.] I got readings around 50 to 70uR. My counter uses the same tube (44-6).

The funny thing is you can pick up any rock from this pile and hold it to the sensor, and the reading is quite low. It's like individual rocks are not that nasty, but the ground is radioactive.

I brought a black light with me. Some radioactive materials glow under black light. None of the rocks reacted to the black light.
