Well, you may be right. But there are rare cases when the ability to zoom down is nice. The attached, taken by Bill Whiffen with a 500mm fixed lens, is such an example.
Although an awesome shot, it would have been nice to have a bit more than just the cockpit of the "Hind" in the picture.

As far as better quality pictures with a fixed focal lens, I won't argue that.
