I find a 400-500mm lens about the most you want to use without a tripod, and a good compromise out there. Zoom is certainly a good idea, especially for Red Flag, where you have no time to change lenses when the pack comes overhead.

Personally I use a good quality 70-210mm zoom lens and a 2x converter, which I find to be a good combination for most situations. Well, and of course my C-5 1250mm scope with a good tripod for the "fun stuff"... ;-)
