X-series and F-series (and all others as well) use independent numerical sequences (e.g. there are X-15, F-15, C-15, XV-15, etc., all unrelated to each other). The "F-35" is actually a misnomer - it should have been the F-24. BTW, the X-sequence has reached X-50 by now.
