Los Alamos Labs Complex in the NTS

I was just reading again through Jerry Freemans report of his hike across the NTS in search of the lost 49'er camp site, online at:
http://www.lasvegassun.com/dossier/events/journey/index.html

On day 2 of his journey he says he ran into a large complex of well-guarded buildings, identified by warning signs as a facility of "L.A.N.L.L. CORPORATION" (Los Alamos National Laboratories).

According to Jerrys description I looked for it on the satellite images, and sure enough, its all there. Down to the guard house in the north of the complex (outside of the frame in the attached link).

Notice the tower, surrounded by a circular road in the northeast. Anyone care to speculate what they are doing there?

I remember that on the NTS tour our tour guide was talking about a training camp for special ops commandos in that area. Of course we never came close to it. A cover story?
