From what I've been able to determine about antenna testing on airplanes, they use test beds built for this purpose. One problem is that you want to measure the radiated field beneath the airplane, but if the airplane is on the ground, it is difficult to make the measurements. The solution is to have the airplane upsidedown, then move a sensor around above the plane with a crane.
