Jerry Freeman trek across NTS

There is a story out there on the internet of a hiking trip that a Jerry Freeman took back in the 1990's to find some rock inscriptions made by early settlers who were traveling from Utah across Nevada back in the 1980's. Death Valley was named after these people. Jerry Freeman set out on a five day hiking trek to find these inscriptions on some canyon walls deep inside the NTS and near Area 51/Groom Lake and Papoose Lake. Apparently, he was able to evade detection the whole way there and back on his round trip hike.

Is there any truth to this story?
