Well, if the picture of the mock-up on the ground was really taken at Van Nuys Airport, there is a tower like structure behind it. If we knew where that tower was, (say a street name or intersection) maybe we could use GE to take a look and go back in time. I think that the earliest picture is 1989 and it is pretty bad. We could at least check to see if the mock-up is still there. It is a long shot.

By the way, there appears to be a flying wing or large horizontal stabilizer in a photo dated 8/25/2006 in front of the "new" tower at 34°12'27.50"N 118°29'30.12"W
