As long as you rent a car that isn't a 1981 Chevy Citation you will be fine. Don't take the tour it's way overpriced and you will be on their schedule. The area is remote but if you for some odd reason happen to break down on the way their it isn't like you won't see anybody for all of 15 minutes. 375 is well traveled during the day and at night, just last month we pulled over to help a cowboy who broke down with his horse trailer. I've been going out there approx 2x a month for the last 16 years (part time resident)and have yet to break down so don't worry about it, just enjoy the drive, don't cross the border and take all the pics you want. Also...stop at the Inn and get a burger...damn good!
