One of the duties of my current job is to manage the GPS inventory for a large environmental consulting firm. At any given time we have about 30 GPS units in the field. These range from consumer grade hand helds up to survey grade equipment that costs thousands of dollars.

Out archeologists are the primary users of the consumer grade equipment. All of them like to use the Garmin 60 series units. We have about a dozen 60CX and CSX's. We also have a few 62s. They seem to prefer the 60's but I think that's mainly because they are used to the menu interface on those and the 62's you have to relearn some of that. The 62's are a bit newer and allow you to load KML's and will do a few other things the 60's won't do.

Another option would be to find an app for you phone that allows you to store maps on the device. Then you don't have to rely on a data connection.
