Russian Bombers near California

Read this article recently about how some Russian bombers flew near the coast of Alaska and California. Looks like this stuff has been going on for some time.

Article made me think up a couple questions though. I do feel a bit silly for asking them I admit. I wonder how our government would handle a defector? I mean what would happen if a Russian pilot were to somehow indicate their intentions(rather than simply go near our airspace) to defect and simply land an aircraft at an airport or airbase in a place like Alaska or California etc?

If a Russian pilot were to intentionally or unintentionally invade US airspace, I wonder how far they would actually have to travel inside before measures more drastic than an "escort" were to occur? I doubt they would ever get as far as a place like Groom or Edwards AFB.
