From everything I've read, the base on the east side of Groom Lake was an emergency airfield associated with a bombing range in the area. No planes were stationed at that airfield, any users came out of Nellis or Tonopah and only landed there as required.

Recent photographs do not show the old airfield as well as ones like the 1968 photo does, which clearly showed the triangular runway arrangement scraped into the brush.
