When the U.S. Navy wanted to trade the Polaris Missle for the Posiden/Trident missle they had to figure a way to make a short, stubby, round-nose missle fly like a long, sleek, sharp-nosed ICBM. What they did was have a long probe extend from the nose of the missle after launch to simulate the condition of a longer, more streamlined shape. It worked and it is still in use, so the concept of using different shapes and materials to attinuate negative atmospheric interactions have been around.
