Although egregious, the delays and cost over-runs of the F-35 still cannot match the incredible cost, huge amounts of re-work and modifications and lengthy operational seasoning of other aircraft projects that later on were deemed incredibly successful such as the B-29. The only only WWII project more costly was the Manhattan project, the first combat outings (from China)were so dismal that they were pulled back from use and it was so unreliable and tough to control most pilots HATED to fly the airplane. Looking back we don't care of its expense and teething trouble as it won WWII, so in a shooting war with a major hi-tech opponent (you know, like the "regional" power of Russia) the ability to have such a warplane like the F-35B could make the difference in whether we go kinetic and if we do, we win.
