Some of the GPS map databases have the border on them, though not perfect. However, when you get near the border (say even half a mile), you shouldn't be driving very fast. I think one of the roads near Bald Mountain just has the orange posts and no signs. If you were really driving fast, you would probably drive right past the border.

While driving, you need to spot places to turn around as you get near the border. Even with a 4wd, you can't just drive off the road to turn around unless you inspect the area very carefully for cactus (which will ruin your day and tires). The dirt off the main path is often very soft. If I back up into this dirt, I always make sure I have two wheels on the dirt road, which has been compacted. Just driving to the side of the ET Highway you can sink into the soft dirt.
