The AF built the highest performing, most complex, most expensive fighter ever built, expected one person to fly it to its max capability in the most sophisticated defenses ever built, and saved even more money by not even building a 2-seat trainer version. Training accidents have been amazingly low for what is expected of the pilots. It has had a lower training accident rate than any fighter ever built.

I flew the F-4, F-105, and F-111. The F-4 and F-105 had characteristics that made them a handful at times. The F-105G flew final approach at over 200 knots! We accepted a high training accident rate back then. We lost more F-4s (several hundred) and F-105s (217) in training than the total number of F-22s built. The current record is amazingly good, because only hand-picked, experienced pilots were the early ones trained. Expect more accidents. It's a dangerous business.
