I used to work in Loss Prevention, and in my state, people working in Law Enforcement, Loss Prevention, and other areas have to take certification or re-certification every two years or so. Certain felonies or misdemeanors committed within a certain amount of years would prevent someone from being able to work in those professions.

However certain felonies or misdemeanors would also prevent someone from being able to work in those professions no matter how long ago they were.

In other words, even if one were to somehow get only a slap on the wrist, depending on certification requirements, chances are someone working in Law Enforcement would be looking for another profession if convicted of espionage for flying an RC plane with cameras in Area 51.
