I can tell you that it is a GREAT place for viewing. There is an elevated hill about 50-60 feet high, with an easy path up. You can park/camp at the bottom, walk up to the top of the hill (2 minutes, max), set up some chairs, bring a cooler of beer, and enjoy a perfect view of the valley, the approach road, the cammo dudes parked a mile or two away (except when they come over to hassle you, lol), and the mountains that lie just to the east of the base.

I have no idea why this spot isn't thought of as a top sky watching spot at A51. Perhaps it's because it lies to the east of the runway at Groom Lake, which runs North/South, so planes taking off might not be coming your way....as they would if you were at the back gate, which is on a line with the runway, though a fair distance to the north. Anyway, we loved Campfire Hill, and it's the only place we saw anything flying, not just the black triangle, but the Janet flight (which you'd never see from the Back Gate), and another couple of other planes which were too far/small for us to identify). If we do the trip next year, we'll spend time there for SURE.
