Snakes are acutely sensitive to vibrations in the ground and normally are aware of you long before you have a chance of seeing them. This is why you don't see them very often, even though the area is prime snake habitat. Rattlesnakes aren't particularly aggressive unless cornered, and as Joerg indicated, if they have the opportunity to flee, they will.
