I would not worry too much about snakes. In almost 14 years of extensive hiking and camping in the area, I had maybe a handful of confirmed sightings. And the ones I ran into were no more interested in a close encounter than myself. The harmless gopher snakes are more common. You can often see them in the Fall enjoying the warm asphalt of the highway in the early evening. Use common sense, make your presence known and if you run into a rattler, leave him an out. He will take it.
