NYT re Reapers at Holloman

NYT Magazine article on Reaper training at Holloman. Fairly typical "isn't this all so sad" take on the program, but a few questions:

1) The reporter wonders whether MQ-9 landing accidents are the fault of pilot error. Don't the MQ-9s land automatically on conventional runways or are they pilot-controlled through landing?

2) This really bugs me, but we're 11+ years into the War on Terror and the NYT is still quoting Taliban/AQ fighters saying that they hide when they "hear drones overhead". In combat, aren't the MQ-1's and -9s typically flying over 20,000ft and can't be seen or heard by anyone on the ground?
