Aviation Week printed a letter to the editor some years ago, replying to an article discussing the peculiar "donut-on-a-rope" contrails which some believe to be made by a classified aircraft. Others say these contrails are simply a natural effect of wind currents, wake turbulence, etc. The letter writer, writing from Poland, said he sided with the "natural phenomenon" camp because, as he put it, 'Here in Eastern Europe and the former USSR we see these things all the time'.
Of course, there is more than one way to interpret his observation... ;P
