correct. In the mid 1980s, the Air Force Research Laboratory, modified and flight tested an F-111 with flexible wing control surfaces in a program called
“Mission Adaptive Wing (MAW). I doubt the budget line item was for this test program but it did cost money and that had to come from somewhere in the budget. the program just didn't happen to be a nasa dryden effort; in the "good old days" the air force actually did do some research on their own. I don't remember but i would bet that the Dryden folks worked with the AFRL folks on this program.
