The first flight or maybe a another (I don't recall now) took off and returned to the plant at Palmdale. After that the Valkyrie took off and landed at Dryden. The one crashed near Barstow and the only other landing other than Dryden is when the plane set down at Wright Patterson for retirement. NASA never used Groom Lake because it lacked the security clearances and because CIA and Air Force refused to give NASA any air superiority at Groom Lake. That is why we couldn't use it as a launch site for the X-15.
