When we were flying the A-12 missions out of Kadena, we had only 3 planes. A Russian trawler stayed just off the coast to warn North Vietnam when one of our planes took off. We changed the tail numbering quite often to make them think we had a larger fleet of the Blackbirds.
Don, your mention of bored crew chiefs gave me a chuckle. At the Area, we were almost like that. Any plane remaining parked on the tarmac for very long had to be rescued to keep us from putting it on the RCS pole. Seriously, a lot of what we accomplished came from bored engineers - not from a specific project.
