I fully endorse your enthusiasm and preparedness. I think you've hit upon it: after not seeing things so many times, you may pay a little less attention to what's going on 26 miles away and a little more to just enjoying the desert (it's a beautiful view from Tikaboo even without Groom Lake) and joking around with friends. While I would stop short of roundly condemning such laxity and weakness of resolve, I agree that discipline is what is required under the circumstances. Unfortunately many of us exhaust some of our discipline just making it up Tikaboo. And the air is thinner up there as well. That can't be discounted. On the other hand, my Swiss friend would have no excuse in that regard, I suppose. So what if you're naive! I think it's great to expect to see something (though perhaps not something in particular), that's probably the preferred level of readiness. That's what it means to be passionate about this field. Perhaps the European team was merely open to the possibility of seeing something, consequently its response to the sighting was not text-book style. Expectation can create reality. Needless to say, I'm sure they'll take their response to the sighting as a wake-up call to be more preapared the next time.
