Groom...pre Watertown

Hi,
I just finished reading Peter Merlin’s book a second time though and noticed a detail that made me thing. On page 7, the introduction states that Mormon settlers moved through the area on their way to California. That got me to thinking. This is a three part question.
1. Before Watertown, was there ever a settlement, like a boom town, or Mormon mission on or near Groom Lake? If not within the realm of American history, how about Pre-Columbian sites? I know there is a mine nearby and I know about the Death Valley party that passed through the area but was there ever anything like a small town/city? I think Edwards had a small city on the lake bed before WWII so just wondering if Groom had anything like that.
2. Has there ever been any archaeological digs done on the lake bed pre Watertown?
3. Are there any photos of the city at Edwards/Muroc?

Thanks for the time.
