I did hear a story of an engineer who found a trash can full of thermal tiles in the early days of the program. He asked his boss if he could have them to line his fireplace at home. The boss said yes. Later, maybe after the "Columbia" disaster, he started selling them. The FBI showed up to arrest him. He proved they were discarded and was perfectly legal in his rights to sell. You can find slivers of thermal tile on ebay, thespacestore.com all the time. I have never seen a full tile for sale.
